The head of state held a meeting on translating the Kazakh alphabet into Latin graphics

During the meeting, Minister of culture and sports Aktoty Raimkulova and Minister of education and science Askhat Aimagambetov reported to the Head of state on the proposals developed during the work of linguists and experts.
Aktoty Raimkulova presented a scientifically based alphabet project. The improved version fully corresponds to the principle of "one sound – one letter", fixed in traditional folk writing, digraphs are not used, i.e., the designation of one sound by two or more characters. The alphabet project includes symbols that represent all 28 sounds of the Kazakh language.
The head of state gave a number of instructions on the issues discussed at the meeting. In particular, the President noted the need to work out the draft alphabet together with scientists and submit it for consideration at the next meeting of the National Commission for the translation of the Kazakh alphabet into Latin graphics under the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Based on the results of this Commission, the Government should submit to the Presidential Administration a draft Decree approving the improved alphabet.
– Do not forget that creating a new alphabet is not an easy question. The development of new graphics cannot be completed in one day or even in one year. Haste in this matter can damage our entire culture and historical identity. The problem is not in the transition from Cyrillic to Latin, but in the fact that a large-scale reform of the Kazakh language is being carried out. We must also take into account the financial side of the issue. The implementation of the Latin alphabet should be carried out gradually. We can say that this schedule is designed for the younger generation, and it is they who should take full advantage of it. Therefore, this process should be carried out systematically, gradually, " the Head of state said.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed the ministries of culture and sports, education and science, information and social development to conduct comprehensive information and explanatory work among the population on the introduction of the new alphabet with the involvement of scientists, experts and intellectuals.
